Ban Lifted After American Greenhouse Growers Partnered with Peers in Dominican Republic

American greenhouse growers have made a lasting impact---increasing yields and improving lives throughout the developing world though the 30-year​-old Farmer-to-Farmer program. In the Dominican Republic, many fruit and vegetable growers are once again able to export to the US after a ban had been imposed due to the presence of the Mediterranean fruit fly or medfly, costing Dominican producers millions of dollars---an estimated $50 million in 2015 alone.

In the summer of 2016, EWB-USA launched a new partnership with USAID in support of our Farmer-to-Farmer: Improving the Sustainability of Kosovo Agriculture program. This one-year program provides technical assistance from U.S. volunteers to farmers, farm groups, agribusinesses and other agriculture sector institutions in developing and transitional countries with the goal of promoting sustainable improvements in food security and agricultural processing, production and marketing. As we pass the program midpoint, project volunteer Russ Zick gives us an update on his time in Kosovo and our achievements to date.

For over 20 years, I have been a passionate volunteer with Farmer-to-Farmer, a program that pairs volunteer American farmers and ranchers with their counterparts in developing countries to tackle the root causes of hunger and poverty through agriculture. As a volunteer, I have had the opportunity to travel the world and meet farmers in other countries, share common experiences in agriculture with them, and teach them about new and modern technologies and practices.
